    Prednisone vs cortisone

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a condition that can affect many different parts of your body. It causes pain and limits your movement, and it gets worse the longer it goes untreated. There are many treatments for RA that can help you manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life, however. Take a look at two such drugs: methylprednisolone and prednisone. Knowing how they’re similar and how they’re not can help you have a more informed conversation with your doctor about the right RA treatment for you. Methylprednisolone and prednisone both belong to a class of drugs called corticosteroids. For people with RA, these drugs help by reducing immune responses that can lead to swelling, pain, and joint damage. Methylprednisolone and prednisone are very similar drugs. Prednisone is used for many different autoimmune diseases and inflammatory conditions, including: asthma, COPD, CIDP, rheumatic disorders, allergic disorders, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, adrenocortical insufficiency, hypercalcemia due to cancer, thyroiditis, laryngitis, severe tuberculosis, urticaria (hives), lipid pneumonitis, pericarditis, multiple sclerosis, nephrotic syndrome, sarcoidosis, to relieve the effects of shingles, lupus, myasthenia gravis, poison oak exposure, Ménière's disease, autoimmune hepatitis, giant-cell arteritis, the Herxheimer reaction that is common during the treatment of syphilis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, uveitis, and as part of a drug regimen to prevent rejection after organ transplant. It is important in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphomas, Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other hormone-sensitive tumors, in combination with other anticancer drugs. Prednisone can be used in the treatment of decompensated heart failure to increase renal responsiveness to diuretics, especially in heart failure patients with refractory diuretic resistance with large dose of loop diuretics. In terms of the mechanism of action for this purpose: prednisone, a glucocorticoid, can improve renal responsiveness to atrial natriuretic peptide by increasing the density of natriuretic peptide receptor type A in the renal inner medullary collecting duct, inducing a potent diuresis. Short-term side effects, as with all glucocorticoids, include high blood glucose levels (especially in patients with diabetes mellitus or on other medications that increase blood glucose, such as tacrolimus) and mineralocorticoid effects such as fluid retention. The mineralocorticoid effects of prednisone are minor, which is why it is not used in the management of adrenal insufficiency, unless a more potent mineralocorticoid is administered concomitantly. It can also cause depression or depressive symptoms and anxiety in some individuals.

Sep 19, 2018. Methylprednisolone and prednisone are two similar drugs that treat rheumatoid arthritis. Both belong to a class of drugs called corticosteroids. Cortisone medications are some of the most effective treatments for reducing the swelling. Prednisone is the steroid most commonly prescribed for lupus. Corticosteroid drugs — including cortisone, hydrocortisone and prednisone — are useful in treating many conditions, such as rashes, lupus and asthma.

In contrast to anabolic steroids (used by “bodybuilders”), corticosteroids are used in inflammatory conditions for their anti–inflammatory effects. They have a rapid onset of action, and profoundly affect many parts of the immune system as well as most other body systems. Corticosteroids are a cornerstone of treating most types of vasculitis, and are often used in combination with other immunosuppressive medications. Many of the side–effects of steroids are predictable. All are related to: 1) the amount of steroid a patient takes in his/her daily dose, and 2) the length of time the patient remains on the medication. We emphasize that not all side–effects occur in all patients. Despite the numerous potential side–effects of corticosteroids listed below, their introduction into patient care 50 years ago revolutionized the treatment of many diseases, including vasculitis. Fludrocortisone (Florinef) is used for its mineralocorticoid activity (causing increased reabsorption of sodium and loss of potassium/hydrogen). Although fludrocortisone technically possesses a small degree of anti-inflammatory activity (1/10th that of hydrocortisone), this effect is negibile at normal therapeutic doses of fludrocortisone (such as 0.05 to 0.2 mg per day). For this reason, fludrocortisone cannot realistically be converted to another corticosteroid on the basis of anti-inflammatory potency.

I have a question regarding the medications Propecia, Avodart, and natural supplement remedies for the treatment of male pattern baldness. I have early signs of hair loss where I noticed it within the past month. I am just losing a little in the frontal areas where the temple is. My question is which is better for hair loss between, Propecia, Avodart (dutasteride), and or natural supplements such as (saw palmetto, nettle root, pygeum, pumkin seeds, beta sitosterol, lysine, green tea extract, grape seed extract)? I was even considering the natural prostate formula from the company of Life Extension with the majority of the above named supplements. I hear that Avodart suppresses both types of enzymes that convert to DHT, and I also hear that Propecia blocks just one enzyme that converts to DHT, and that all you need to block is that one particular enzyme. Avodart may sound better because insurance would pay for that. My insurance does not pay for Propecia because its considered cosmetic. In 1986, scientists discovered that nitric oxide (NO) was a potent vasodilator and could improve circulation, heart health, and anything else that relied on optimal blood flow. Researchers at Pfizer, with big, hand-rubbing plans, began experimenting with drugs called PDE-5 inhibitors that enhance and perpetuate NO's blood-vessel dilating effects. Their goal, at the time, was to find a treatment for angina. First up was a drug called sildenafil citrate, but drug trials showed that it was only modestly effective in treating the condition. However, some of the researchers refused to say die and started looking at the notes detailing the drug's side effects. Holy moly, there it was: A lot of the test subjects confessed to being visited by the erection fairy a lot more often after taking the drug. This observation caused Pfizer scientists to no doubt feel a little stirring in their own pants as they contemplated the financial prospects of such a drug. Weight loss with the help of Viagra?
